The Israeli military is preparing a substantial response following Iran’s recent missile assault, which involved nearly 200 ballistic missiles and inflicted damage across multiple locations in Israel. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that this attack will “have consequences.”
Although the missile strikes caused damage, the military confirmed that no aircraft or vital infrastructure were directly impacted. Israeli officials have emphasized that their upcoming response will be “serious and significant,” amidst rising regional tensions, as reported by The Times of Israel.
The United States has not received assurance from Israel that it will refrain from targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities in light of the recent attacks, according to a senior State Department official speaking to CNN. The official remarked, “It is really hard to tell,” when questioned about Israel’s potential actions. Many U.S. officials have expressed their support for Israel’s right to respond to the missile attacks.
Earlier this week, President Joe Biden indicated that the U.S. would not support an Israeli strike on Iran’s nuclear program, suggesting that if he were in Israel’s position, he would explore other options rather than targeting oil fields. He cautioned against escalating tensions, urging Israel to remember U.S. support when considering its next steps.
In a surprise appearance in the White House briefing room, Biden advised against striking Iran’s oil facilities, stating his desire to prevent an escalation into all-out war in the Middle East. He noted that the Israelis “have not concluded what they’re going to do” in retaliation for the Iranian missile assault.
A senior U.S. official highlighted that while communication with Israeli counterparts is frequent, there is no clear timeline for Israel’s response. This official suggested that Israel might prefer to avoid retaliating on the anniversary of the Hamas attack, as such actions could detract from the day’s significance.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has pledged a strong response to the missile barrage, which included around 180 missiles aimed at Israel. Although many were intercepted, some landed in civilian and military areas, prompting calls for retaliation from Israeli officials. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has warned of potential strikes on Israeli oil refineries and gas fields in response.
Ali Fadavi, the deputy commander of the IRGC, issued a warning that if Israel makes a miscalculated move, all of its energy facilities could be targeted. “If Israel makes a mistake, all of its energy facilities, refineries, and gas fields will be hit,” he stated.
Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araqchi, who recently visited Beirut, warned that any action against Tehran would lead to a stronger retaliatory response. He clarified that while Iran does not plan to continue attacks, any aggression from Israel would be met with significant consequences. Iran has claimed that its recent attack on Israel was retaliation for the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, with Hezbollah launching rockets at Israel
